Dear Valued Guests,
It seems like just yesterday the first Thai Place Restaurant opened 35 years ago to introduce Thai food to Pittsburgh. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for choosing to dine with us for decades. It has brightened our days and we hope your experience was nothing short of delightful. Our team takes immense pride in serving you our exceptional homemade Thai dishes passed down from recipes in owner Surin’s family. However, as all good things must come to an end, we have decided to fully retire and close our restaurant doors on Sunday October 20th, 2024. Therefore, the last day our restaurant will be open for both takeout and in-house dining will be Saturday October 19th, 2024 from 11:00am - 9:00pm.
We are so grateful for your loyal support over the years and we will miss serving you in our restaurants. But good news! We recently launched 5 unique Thai Place Pittsburgh cooking sauces and are thrilled for you to be part of our next venture. It has been a labor of passion to perfect these distinct sauces so you can enjoy your favorite Thai Place flavors in your own kitchens.
Available in Market District: Shadyside, Waterworks, Murrysville, Bethel Park, Settlers Ridge, Wexford. Look for them in the Buy Local section at your Market District Stores.
Also available at the Oriental Market on McKnight Road.
Please find complete recipes and cooking instructions on our website: www.ThaiPlacePGH.com
Every sauce is easy to use and you can tailor them to fit your own tastes. Now you can bring Thai Place to your home and enjoy the flavors of Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, Thai Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour, General Tso’s and more.
Thank you for being part of our culinary journey. Stay joyful, stay hungry!
Warm regards,
Surin & Santi, Owners, Thai Place Restaurant
As the owners of the first Thai restaurant in Pittsburgh, Santi and Surin came to Pittsburgh in 1967 as scholar graduate students from Bangkok, Thailand. After completing their studies, Santi worked as a professional engineer and Surin as a microbiologist in the Pittsburgh area for many years.
Surin’s family in Thailand had a catering background and she was known amongst her friends and family in Pittsburgh as being a very good cook. These friends soon encouraged her to open a Thai restaurant since one did not exist in Pittsburgh at the time.
In 1989, Pittsburgh was introduced to Thai food. Surin developed the menu and created the sauces. Thai Place Harmarville opened it’s doors with a lineup of three professional chefs from five-star hotels in Thailand: Dusit Thani, Hilton, and River Quay. Four more restaurants would follow: Thai Place Shadyside, Thai Place Fox Chapel, Thai Place Café (Oakland), and Thai Place Wexford. Numerous awards and accolades were received.
Twenty-six years later, Thai Place Shadyside, Fox Chapel and Wexford continue to serve authentic Thai cuisine. Thai Place has even served it’s popular Thai dishes to visiting celebrities such as U2, Martina Navratilova, Peter Falk and Troy Polamalu.
If you haven’t sampled Surin’s Thai food yet, then we invite you to do so. Surin, Santi and the Thai Place staff welcome you at any of their locations.
